Strategic Advisor for Hospitality and Leadership
Hospitality entrepreneur and social change agent, Chip Conley is a leader at the forefront of the sharing economy. At age 26, he founded Joie de Vivre Hospitality and turned one inner city motel into the second largest boutique hotel brand in the US. After 24 years as CEO, Chip sold his innovative company and soon thereafter the founders of Airbnb invited him to help transform their promising home sharing start-up into the world’s leading hospitality brand. During his tenure as Airbnb’s Head of Global Hospitality and Strategy, Chip was involved in a wide array of the company’s activities. Today, he acts as Strategic Advisor for Hospitality and Leadership. Chip is the author of five books, including PEAK and EMOTIONAL EQUATIONS, based on the work of famed psychologists Abraham Maslow and Viktor Frankl, who inspired his theories on transformation and meaning in business and life. His next book, WISDOM@WORK: The Making of a Modern Elder comes out in September (Currency) and shares his experience as both student and sage at Airbnb. Chip is the founder of Fest300 (part of Everfest, the world’s premiere festival website), San Francisco’s annual “Celebrity Pool Toss,” and the Hotel Hero Awards. He is a recipient of hospitality’s highest honor, the Pioneer Award, and holds a BA and MBA from Stanford University, and an honorary doctorate in psychology from Saybrook University. Chip serves on the boards of the Burning Man Project and the Esalen Institute, where the Conley Library bears his name.
